Compass Point Books

Publishers of children's nonfiction have many different goals, and many different target audiences. Regardless of the method or the target audience, however, all children's publishers share one goal - the desire to foster a love of reading in children of all ages.

Compass Point Books launched in 2001 with a simple vision: to provide interesting yet educational books for children who are reading at their own grade level. Today, Compass Point has more than 500 titles in print that can be used for everything from homework help to recreational reading. More and more young people are turning to nonfiction books for their "just for fun" reading, and Compass is finding a home among those readers.

To reach that goal, Compass Point set out to publish high-quality books that will capture the reader's imagination and catch the eye at the same time. Sharp, full-color photographs, attractive designs and numerous special features augment the rich text in each book.

The publisher's offerings include a state series (This Land Is Your Land) and a president's series (Profiles of the Presidents), both of which are now complete. These standard series bolster an extensive line of Americana topics that weaves throughout the Compass Point line. The We the People series of American history books now numbers 35 titles on everything from The Jamestown Colony to The Emancipation Proclamation to The Persian Gulf War.

Compass Point's list reaches deep into science and other topics as well, all with the goal of bringing educational topics to life. The Simply Science series offers 24 books on basic science topics, while the Investigate Science series leads children through hands-on experiments to bring the subject matter home. Four Compass Point science series have earned Best Books Awards from the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Our Solar System series captured a Teachers' Choice Award from Learning Magazine.

But Compass Point doesn't stop there. Their catalog includes books on sports and games for the fun-loving child, Tall Tales and Seriously Silly Stories for the younger set, and even a series called The Poet's Toolbox that act as poetry anthologies while teaching kids many different poetic forms.

Through it all, the goal remains the same.
