Sleeping Bear Press

The Sleeping Bear Press started publishing children's titles in 1998, with the publication of The Legend of Sleeping Bear. The company now publishes about 35 new children's titles a year. Their growth and sudden recognition has been both dramatic and noteworthy.

Their first title, Legend of Sleeping Bear , was named the Official State of Michigan Children's Book. Their surprise hit from last year, Mercedes and the Chocolate Pilot , is on the Texas Blue Bonnet master list after being named one of the top ten Book Sense 76 fall 2003 children's picks. And Z is for Zamboni: A Hockey Alphabet recently won Canada's Blue Spruce, an award voted on by Canadian school children.

Sleeping Bear Press sees itself as a national publisher of regional children's picture books. Their far-reaching "Discover America State by State" series has garnered recognition from Governors and first ladies. Frances Owens, First Lady of Colorado says, "Through the pages of C is for Centennial our school children have been able to celebrate Colorado, it's history and splendor." Michigan's Governor, Jennifer Granholm, has written, "M is for Mitten is one of my favorites. It's a creative and imaginative way to teach young children about the wonders of our state."

"Working with authors and illustrators from within each state has been very important to the success of the series" said Heather Hughes, Editorial Director at Sleeping Bear Press "because they know their state, we rely on their expertise both editorially and visually." Sleeping Bear receives calls every day from librarians asking us when the entire series will be available. And new titles are being produced all the time.

In addition to their alphabet series Sleeping Bear Press has developed another state-by-state series titled Count Your Way Across the USA. This counting series, with the same format as Discover America State by State, uses numbers and counting as a way to teach children (and adults) the unique features of their state.

Their fall list is rounded out with a Holiday title that has a tremendous groundswell buzz, Redheaded Robbie's Christmas Story . The illustrations are reminiscent of David Shannon's work and the story is warmly endearing, without being saccharine. Staying true to their mission of being a national publisher of regional books they are publishing The Edmund Fitzgerald , a picture book of the great lakes iron ore freighter that sank in 1975 and was made famous by the Gordon Lightfoot song.
